Season Ticket Price Increases: Should Losing Teams Be Allowed to Raise Prices?

Written by
Patrick Dilworth

Season ticket prices are rising across major sports leagues, including the NBA. Even teams with losing records are increasing prices, sparking debate among players, fans, analysts, and, recently, Draymond Green and Charles Barkley.

Should NBA teams be allowed to increase prices?

Summary of Draymond Green and Charles Barkley’s Proposal

When Draymond Green and Charles Barkley agree on a topic, the sports world listens. Their latest proposal? Teams shouldn’t be allowed to raise season ticket prices if they can’t maintain a winning record.

  • On a recent episode of Inside the NBA, the NBA’s tanking problem was discussed in detail.
  • One of Charles Barkley’s proposed fixes was that NBA teams with losing records should not be allowed to raise ticket prices.
  • On a recent appearance on his podcast “The Draymond Green Show,” Draymond Green revisited Chuck’s idea and agreed.

Should Losing Teams Be Able to Raise Season Ticket Prices?

If you missed this historic stat from the 2025-26 season, a record eight NBA teams just finished with 55 or more losses. The league has tried adjusting lottery odds, adding the play-in, and other tactics to dissuade NBA teams from trying to lose in the past decade. New anti-tanking measures are in the works, but the NBA’s tanking problem, arguably, got worse in 2025-2026 rather than better.

This idea would provide owners with a financial incentive to win. With on-court tactics failing, Charles Barkley and Draymond Green see hitting teams in the wallet as a deterrent to continuous tanking.

Which NBA Teams Would Not Be Able to Raise Prices in 2025-26?

Under Draymond and Chuck’s proposal, the following teams would not be allowed to raise season ticket prices for the 2026-27 NBA season.

TiqAssist’s Thoughts: Should Losing Teams Raise Season Ticket Prices?

Overall, TiqAssist loves Chuck and Draymond’s idea. There are certainly some expectations and other factors to consider. Should losing teams that traded for star players get a pass? It’s great to see the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards and Indiana Pacers be aggressive by trading draft picks and taking on large contracts.

Struggling teams should feel incentivized to acquire key players, improve upon the previous year’s record, and spend more in free agency. They also shouldn’t be punished for bad injury luck.
